As expecting parents, we have so many ideas in our heads about what parenting is going to be like. I would say 100% of all parents realize that these ideas are not accurate AT ALL once we actually become parents. With my oldest, I told myself she would only eat homemade organic baby food…she hated it! 😉 I told myself that my middle daughter would be a great sleeper – after her 4m sleep regression, she didn’t sleep through the night until she was 18 months. With my third, I thought I had it all figured out, she is now on a daily dose on antibiotics to prevent recurring bladder infections and has been to children’s hospital more times than I’ve been before as 7 years as a parent!

I say all of this to say – after photographing more than 50 newborns, I still get ideas in my head…and when a parent tells me they really want a specific shot, I work really hard to get that shot…however, ultimately, the one in control is the baby! Jackson’s mom had two shots that she really wanted. I tried the first one 3 or 4 times, and it wasn’t happening, and the second one we spent probably 30 minutes working on it, and it didn’t happen either.

Most photographers I know are extremely OCD and are perfectionists! I am one of them. I beat myself up over photography more than I do than anything else! It took me the rest of the day to recover from not being able to get the shots that Jackson’s mamma really wanted! Some babies sleep their whole sessions, and from time to time, we have one that doesn’t sleep, or has gas and cries, or has some other issue and just can’t get comfortable!

Now that I’ve finished his gallery of images, I feel so happy that despite struggling through the session, I got a full gallery of images that I am very happy with! A year ago, I would not have been able to get half of these images, and most likely would have called it quits. I am so excited to show Anna these pictures (I feel this way about all of my sessions!) and also so excited to see him again at 4 months for his milestone session.
